I Just Got Hacked: My Browser Opened Automatically While I Was in the Shower and Led Me to My Crypto Accounts

My Disturbing Encounter with a Potential Hacker

Recently, I experienced a troubling incident that made me reconsider my online security. It all began shortly after I finished up a shower. I returned to find my browser had inexplicably opened, and to my shock, I witnessed someone typing the word “bitch” into the Chrome address bar. They proceeded to navigate my folders, ultimately landing on my bookmarks for cryptocurrency platforms like Coinbase and Binance.

In a panic, I attempted to exit the browser using the alt+F4 command, but nothing seemed responsive. My mouse ceased to function as well, leaving me with no choice but to force shut down my computer. At this point, I was left wondering what steps to take next.

Update on My Response

I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who offered their insights into the situation. Following their suggestions, I swiftly changed all of my passwords and conducted a clean installation of my operating system. I also removed unnecessary software like TeamViewer, which several contributors indicated could be linked to the issue. Now, I’m ensuring that LastPass prompts for my password every time I open my browser and utilizing token and authenticator apps to add an extra layer of security during logins.

It’s worth mentioning that I do not store any cryptocurrency directly on my computer. The folders the intruder accessed were merely bookmarks to my crypto accounts. The hacker’s actions were audacious—typing the slur, backspacing, and compulsively searching through my bookmarks. Surprisingly, my screen didn’t turn black, which typically occurs during a remote takeover, and I was completely unable to use my mouse or keyboard while this was happening.

On a more positive note, I have a tech-savvy friend who is part of a hacker group. I’ve known him for a long time and trust him completely. He has a knack for defending his friends against online threats, and I feel reassured knowing he’s on my side.

This incident has certainly heightened my awareness of cybersecurity risks. Going forward, I urge everyone to be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their digital lives.
