Upgrade Your Laptop RAM: What to Do with Old Sticks?
Recently, I made a significant upgrade to my laptop, boosting its RAM from 8GB (two 4GB sticks) to 16GB (two 8GB sticks) of DDR4 2666MHz. This change has noticeably enhanced my laptop’s performance, particularly for gaming purposes. Now, I’m faced with the question: what should I do with my old RAM sticks?
My HP Pavilion gaming laptop originally came equipped with two 4GB DDR4 SK Hynix RAM modules configured in dual-channel mode. While they served me well, I learned that they are of the 1Rx16 variety, which are considered slower compared to the 1Rx8 modules I recently installed. These new Crucial Basics 8GB sticks not only provide more memory but also leverage the more efficient 1Rx8 technology, contributing to the improved performance.
As a result, I’ve been contemplating what to do with my retired SK Hynix 4GB RAM sticks. Should I hold onto them for possible future use, or consider selling them? If selling is the route I choose, where would be the best platform to do so?
Additionally, my sister owns a Dell laptop that currently has a single 8GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM stick (1Rx8). I’m considering swapping her single stick for my two 4GB sticks to create a dual-channel configuration. I understand that a dual-channel setup can offer better performance compared to a single-channel one. Given that her existing stick is of the 1Rx8 variety, would this arrangement significantly enhance her laptop’s capabilities, outweighing the drawbacks of the 1Rx16 sticks?
I would love to hear your thoughts and advice on these matters. Thank you in advance for your insights!
