Troubleshooting a Sudden GPU Failure on a Used Laptop: Seeking Solutions

As an IT professional, I pride myself on being able to troubleshoot various technical issues. However, I’ve recently encountered a perplexing problem that has left me scratching my head.

A few weeks ago, I purchased a used laptop equipped with an Nvidia 3060 GPU from my previous company. It performed admirably for around two weeks, but then, unexpectedly, the GPU seemed to cease functioning.

In an effort to resolve the problem, I’ve undertaken a comprehensive series of troubleshooting steps. Initially, I reinstalled the graphics drivers, only to verify that the system BIOS was up-to-date as well. I even attempted to revert the BIOS and Windows updates, uninstalling drivers and rolling back to earlier versions. In a last-ditch effort, I completely reinstalled Windows and even reverted to a previous iteration of the operating system to see if that would restore the card’s functionality.

Interestingly, while the GPU is still visible in the Device Manager, it appears to be unrecognized by any other applications or software on the laptop. This lack of recognition has stumped me, and I’m reaching out to the community for advice.

If anyone has encountered a similar issue or has suggestions on further diagnostic steps, your insights would be greatly appreciated. Your expertise could make a significant difference in resolving this mystery!
