I’ve Been Appointed as Security Lead Without a Clue How to Manage It

Navigating a New Responsibility: My Unexpected Journey into Cybersecurity

Starting a new job can be both exciting and daunting, especially when unexpected responsibilities come your way. Recently, I found myself in this very situation: I’ve been tasked with overseeing cybersecurity at my new workplace—a role I certainly didn’t anticipate when I started, nor did I feel prepared for.

During my interview, the conversation briefly touched upon “helping with computer stuff,” but it never occurred to me that I would be entrusted with managing the company’s cybersecurity strategy. Surprisingly, the organization lacks any established protocols in this area. To make matters more challenging, there was no one in this role before me, leaving me to carve a path through uncharted territory.

While the company is currently flying under the radar, there’s a clear intention to draw more attention to our operations in the near future. To prepare for this change, we’re looking to bring in a security consultant. My hope is to present a solid foundation when we finally welcome in someone experienced in the field, rather than being met with skepticism for our lack of preparation.

So, where do I even begin?

Recognizing my inexperience, I’ve turned to various resources and the supportive community around me for guidance. I’m trying to approach this daunting task methodically, focusing on the essentials of cybersecurity best practices. From understanding basic security protocols to implementing simple yet effective measures, I’m determined to establish a strong starting point.

If you’re ever thrust into a similar situation—perhaps unexpectedly handed the reins of a critical function—my suggestion is to embrace the challenge with an open mind. Seek advice, leverage online resources, and connect with professionals in the cybersecurity field. Yes, I’m facing obstacles, but with a little perseverance and support, I’m confident I can navigate this new responsibility successfully.

Thank you to everyone for your encouragement and insights. I believe I’ll make it through this with some new skills under my belt!
