Navigating the Unknown: My Journey into Cybersecurity
Recently, I embarked on a new professional journey, and while I anticipated contributing to various technical aspects of the business, I never imagined I would find myself responsible for managing our cybersecurity efforts. During my interview, “helping with computer-related tasks” was mentioned, but I was never explicitly hired for my technical skills; this responsibility simply wasn’t on my radar.
To my surprise, I’ve realized that the company lacks a solid cybersecurity framework, and I am now tasked with establishing protocols from the ground up. There hasn’t been anyone dedicated to this area before me, which presents both a challenge and an opportunity. While I am eager to embrace this role, I must admit I have no formal training, certifications, or considerable experience in cybersecurity.
Although our company is currently relatively low-profile, we are anticipating a shift in visibility that will require us to fortify our security measures. As we prepare for this transition, there are plans to bring in a security consultant to assess and enhance our defenses. My goal is to ensure that we present ourselves as competent and prepared when this expert arrives.
So, where do I begin this daunting task of building a cybersecurity foundation?
I’ve reached out to various forums and fellow professionals to seek guidance on starting from scratch, and I’m encouraged by the wealth of input I’ve received. With the right resources and a strategic approach, I’m confident that I can successfully navigate this challenge and protect our organization’s digital assets.
Thank you to everyone who has offered advice and support—your insights have been invaluable, and I feel more equipped to tackle this responsibility head-on. Here’s to learning and growing in this new endeavor!
