I’ve Been Tasked with Managing Security Without Any Experience

Navigating the Unknown: Taking Charge of Cybersecurity in a New Role

Stepping into a new job is always a blend of excitement and uncertainty, but what happens when you find yourself thrust into a role you’re completely unprepared for? That’s exactly what I’m facing in my current position, where I’ve unexpectedly taken on the responsibility of managing cybersecurity without any formal training or experience in the field.

When I joined the team, my primary role centered around ‘helping with computer stuff.’ However, I quickly discovered that managing cybersecurity was unexpectedly part of my new responsibilities. To complicate matters, the company has had little to no security protocols in place prior to my arrival. There hasn’t been anyone dedicated to this area before, and though I’m eager to take on this challenge, I can’t help but feel overwhelmed.

While it’s a relief that my company isn’t currently under intense scrutiny, we anticipate an expanded presence in the near future—bringing with it a greater need for robust security measures. Plans are in place to eventually hire a cybersecurity consultant, but there’s a pressing need to demonstrate competency before that happens. It’s essential that we make progress so we don’t look entirely out of our depth when we finally enlist someone with real expertise.

So, where do I even begin this daunting journey?

First off, I recognize the importance of educating myself on the fundamentals of cybersecurity. I intend to explore online courses, certifications, and resources that can help build a solid knowledge base. Networking with professionals in the industry, attending relevant workshops, and reading up on current threats and best practices will also be top priorities on my list.

I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from the community as I’ve shared this challenge. While the path ahead seems fraught with complexity, I’m hopeful about building a foundation that not only prepares our team for a successful consultant engagement but also secures our company’s digital assets moving forward.

Thank you to everyone who has offered guidance so far—it seems I’m not alone in this journey! With determination and a willingness to learn, I truly believe I can navigate through this initial phase of uncertainty. Here’s to adapting and thriving in unfamiliar territory!
