What to Do with a Stash of 500 Old Hard Drives: Seeking Guidance
Recently, I’ve found myself in quite a predicament involving a significant collection of hard drives—over 500 to be exact—sitting in my garage. The backstory involves my late father-in-law, who once came into possession of a massive inventory of refurbished SCSI hard disk drives. Although his original plan was to sell these drives, his untimely passing left me with the responsibility of figuring out their fate.
Upon investigating these drives, I’ve discovered that their market value varies considerably, ranging from $10 to $120 each, depending on the specific model and condition. However, given their age, I’m left uncertain about the viability of finding interested buyers in today’s digital landscape.
For context, all of these hard drives are factory refurbished, sealed, and packaged, ready for shipping.
I’m torn between wanting to cut my losses—essentially my late father-in-law’s losses—and the hesitation to scrap these drives outright. After all, there may be individuals or businesses out there that could truly benefit from these devices.
Here are the specific model numbers for reference:
- Seagate Barracuda ST15150N
- Seagate Barracuda ST118273LC
- Seagate Cheetah ST118202LC
- IBM DRHS IEC-950 ECE32148
I’m reaching out to this community for advice on how to move forward. Should I attempt to sell these hard drives through online marketplaces, or would it be more practical to consider recycling them? Any insights or experiences you might have regarding similar situations would be invaluable. Thank you!
