Urgent Alert: Delete the “Barcode Scanner” App by Lavabird Immediately
If you have the “Barcode Scanner” app by Lavabird installed on your smartphone, it’s time to take action and uninstall it right away. Here’s what you need to know.
Recently, MalwareBytes, a well-known cybersecurity firm, reported alarming findings regarding the “Barcode Scanner” app available on the Google Play Store. This once-reputable application has turned into a significant threat, behaving like malicious software following its latest update.
Lavabird developed this app with the intention of enabling users to scan QR codes and barcodes using their smartphone cameras. However, new updates have transformed it into a vehicle for intrusive advertising and unsolicited links leading to potentially harmful websites, all without user authorization.
MalwareBytes researchers discovered previously unseen malicious code embedded within the app following its most recent update. They noted that these malicious elements are cleverly designed to evade detection by Google Play Protect, making them particularly challenging to identify.
Despite these serious concerns, there has been no official warning from the Google Play Store, meaning many users may unknowingly continue to use this compromised app.
If you suspect that your device is behaving unusually, itβs advisable to check your app settings. Look for the package name “com.qrcodescanner.barcodescanner” and remove it from your device immediately.
