Meet Nick Percoco: A Veteran in Cybersecurity Ready to Share Insights
Greetings, fellow readers! I’m excited to introduce myself—my name is Nick Percoco, and I currently serve as the Chief Security Officer (CSO) at Kraken, a leading global digital asset exchange. With more than 25 years of experience in the ever-evolving fields of security and technology, I have dedicated my career to safeguarding digital landscapes. I’m also the founder of SpiderLabs at Trustwave and the organizer of THOTCON, a well-known hacker conference held in Chicago.
My Journey in Cybersecurity
My fascination with technology began at a young age, learning to code on the Timex Sinclair 1000 when I was just seven years old during the early 1980s. Throughout the late ’80s and early ’90s, I became an active participant in the Chicagoland Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) community, using a Commodore 64 and later an Intel 386 PC running Linux. It was during these formative years that I truly fell in love with the hacker ethos and culture, which ultimately led me to establish THOTCON, now entering its 12th year.
Professional Milestones
Before taking on my role at Kraken, I was the CSO at Uptake, an innovative industrial AI company. I also held the position of Vice President of Global Services at Rapid7, a hybrid security firm dedicated to addressing cybersecurity challenges. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my insights on security breaches, malware, and various information security trends at notable conferences such as Black Hat, DEF CON, and OWASP. My audience has included high-profile organizations like the Department of Homeland Security, US-CERT, Interpol, and the United States Secret Service.
In my current role at Kraken, I am actively engaged in developing and implementing robust security programs designed to protect our cryptocurrency exchange from potential threats. My work has encompassed investigating major data breaches, allowing me to gain a deeper understanding of the strategies employed by cybercriminals.
