Currently serving as the Chief Security Officer at Kraken, Nick brings over 25 years of extensive experience in security and technology to the table. His career is marked by significant contributions to the cybersecurity field, both in corporate settings and through community engagement as a hacker conference organizer.
A Journey Through Cybersecurity
Nick’s passion for technology ignited at a young age. He was just seven years old when he began coding on a Timex Sinclair 1000, and by his teenage years, he was immersing himself in the vibrant Chicagoland bulletin board system (BBS) scene, utilizing computers like the Commodore 64 and later, an Intel 386 PC running Linux. This deep interest in technology laid the foundation for a career dedicated to protecting digital assets.
Before joining Kraken, Nick served as the Chief Security Officer at Uptake, an industrial Artificial Intelligence firm, and held the position of Vice President of Global Services at Rapid7, a renowned cybersecurity company. His rich background includes sharing invaluable insights on subjects ranging from malware and mobile security to information security trends at prominent conferences, including Black Hat, DEF CON, and OWASP. He has also shared his expertise with esteemed organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), US-CERT, Interpol, and the United States Secret Service.
Building Security at Kraken
At Kraken, Nick oversees the organization’s Security, IT, and Engineering teams, playing a pivotal role in safeguarding the cryptocurrency exchange from cyber threats. In recent years, he has spearheaded initiatives aimed at fortifying Kraken’s defenses against potential attacks, ensuring that the digital assets of clients remain secure.
Moreover, Nick is deeply engaged in the hacking community through THOTCON, a hacker conference he founded in Chicago. With its 12th installment on the horizon in 2023, the conference continues to be a platform for sharing knowledge, fostering innovation, and promoting responsible hacking practices.
