The Perils of Pre-Installed Antivirus: Why You Should Ditch McAfee

As an IT technician with over 14 years of experience, I frequently face a common concern among customers: their brand-new laptops are either experiencing severe performance issues or simply “don’t work.” More often than not, the culprit behind these frustrations is a third-party antivirus program, with McAfee and Avast leading the charge as the main offenders.

Let me make this abundantly clear: If you’ve recently purchased a laptop that comes with McAfee pre-installed, it’s best to remove it immediately. Windows Defender, which comes integrated into Windows, is more than sufficient for everyday protection and overall system health.

The McAfee Dilemma

Throughout my career, I’ve seen many programs, but none have proven to be as problematic and burdensome as McAfee. Often, users find that their devices slow to a crawl, hindering their ability to use the laptop effectively. This is primarily due to the resource-intensive nature of McAfee, which often comes bundled with laptops as part of a promotional agreement with manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell, Asus, and HP. Unfortunately, these agreements don’t consider the actual performance capabilities of the machines.

While Avast also poses similar issues, I must admit that it typically allows for uninstallation without the same level of hostility as McAfee. The latter’s removal process is notoriously complex, designed to dissuade users from freeing their systems from its grasp.

A Hidden Agenda?

There is a pervasive suspicion that companies like McAfee engage in tactics beyond mere software installation. It’s concerning to think they may influence popular tech outlets to downplay the effectiveness of native solutions like Windows Defender. However, for the vast majority of users—unless you’re specifically targeted for sensitive data—Windows Defender delivers robust protection against standard threats.

The Uninstall Obstacle

In my experience, attempting to uninstall McAfee can be a frustrating ordeal. You will likely need IT support to navigate this process, as the application has built-in obstacles to prevent easy removal. Even if you manage to access an advanced uninstaller tool or the command prompt, McAfee’s triggers make it exceptionally difficult to remove without first downloading their designated uninstaller.

Interestingly, the uninstallation process introduces its own set of complications, with decisions and permissions buried in convoluted terms of service agreements. This can lead to unwanted installations of additional programs—all while the original intent was simply to free your computer from unwarranted software.
