Installed a fresh SSD, configured a new operating system, and removed the old OS files. It ran smoothly for three days, but today, the PC suddenly refuses to start. What’s going on?

Troubleshooting Boot Issues After SSD Installation: A Personal Experience

If you’ve recently upgraded your computer with a new SSD and encountered boot problems, you’re certainly not alone. I recently faced a frustrating situation with my Dell G3 3579 after installing a WD NVMe M.2 SSD, which I believe could be helpful for those in a similar predicament.

The Setup and Subsequent Issue

Initially, my experience was smooth sailing. I successfully added my new SSD, set up a fresh operating system, and removed the previous OS files without any hitches. Everything functioned properly for three days, and then disaster struck: my computer suddenly failed to boot up, displaying the ominous error message: “Required device not found.” (See the screenshot here).

After encountering this error, I tried everything I could to access recovery mode, but unfortunately, I had no luck. In a desperate move, I booted from a media device to access the Command Prompt. Running DiskPart revealed that even though the SSD was online, the two partitions were inaccessible, leading me to wonder how this could occur.

Taking Action in a Pinch

With limited data on the drive and time being of the essence, I opted for a drastic solution: I cleaned the SSD, converted it to a GPT format, and reinstalled Windows. This approach, while somewhat of a last resort, allowed me to regain functionality, but it left me grappling with the question—what went wrong in the first place?

My Findings and Ongoing Investigations

In an effort to understand the root cause of the issue, I conducted some research. The consensus among various online forums seems to be that, for reasons still unclear, the SSD may have been disconnected or encountered a glitch that caused its volumes to be dismounted. This would explain why the disk appeared online in DiskPart yet the partitions were reported as offline while remaining in a healthy state.

As I continue to investigate this matter and gather more information, I will be sure to provide updates for anyone who may find themselves facing similar challenges. If you’re able to pinpoint the underlying cause of a similar situation or have insights to share, I would greatly appreciate your input!

In today’s tech-heavy world, issues like these can be daunting, but they also provide valuable learning opportunities. If you have experienced similar SSD woes or have tips to prevent such occurrences in the future, please share!
