This morning, I received an intriguing call from my internet service provider. A technician requested to come to my home because he claimed my network setup was somehow interfering with the service in my neighborhood. Naturally, this piqued my interest, especially since I’m an IT professional and web developer.

To give you some context, my internet setup is pretty straightforward. I’m using cable internet with their modem connected to an Archer C7 router. My configuration involves a single Ethernet cable connecting to a physical PC and a Linksys Powerline adapter attached to the router. The rest of my devices connect wirelessly, making it quite a simple arrangement.

Given my background in technology, I found it perplexing that my setup could potentially disrupt service to others. I reviewed the situation and quickly ruled out the possibility of creating loops in their VLANs or causing other network issues due to my setup.

However, here’s where my thoughts shifted. I confirmed that the request was indeed legitimate; the call originated from the official ISP number. Still, I couldn’t shake off my confusion regarding how my basic network configuration could be at fault.

After a bit of troubleshooting, including a closer inspection of the coaxial cable, it turned out that the problem was linked to a minor physical issue. We adjusted the coax about two inches and tightened the connector. Remarkably, this simple fix not only resolved the interference but also resulted in approximately a 10% improvement in my internet speed during various tests.

In conclusion, while my initial concerns about network disruption seemed unwarranted, a small adjustment made a big difference. This experience serves as a reminder of the importance of regularly checking and maintaining our home network setups, as even minor details can significantly affect performance.
