Navigating the Unknown: My Unexpected Journey into Cybersecurity Management
Stepping into a new role can often come with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Recently, I embarked on a professional journey in a new company, where my expertise in technology would be valued—at least, that was the plan. However, when I arrived, I quickly discovered that my responsibilities extended beyond simple computer assistance; I was tasked with overseeing the company’s cybersecurity. To say I was unprepared would be an understatement.
It’s important to note that cybersecurity was never part of my formal training or expertise. Unfortunately, I found myself in charge of a domain that lacked any established protocols or previous oversight. The realization struck me hard: I was now responsible for safeguarding our digital infrastructure without the benefit of any prior experience or qualifications.
The organization I’m with is currently in a unique position; while we don’t face immediate scrutiny, there is an anticipation of increased attention in the near future. As part of our preparatory measures, there’s a plan to hire a security consultant to help navigate this complex landscape. However, I want to ensure that when we bring in an expert, we approach the discussion from a position of understanding rather than ignorance.
So, where do I begin in this daunting endeavor? This question has been a constant in my mind since I took on these responsibilities. As I start piecing together a plan, I am reminded of the importance of reaching out for guidance and tapping into available resources.
