I’ve been put in charge of security and I have no idea what I’m doing.

Navigating the Unknown: My Journey into Cybersecurity Management

Taking on a new role often brings with it unexpected challenges, and my recent job transition has certainly put that to the test. Although I was brought on board primarily to assist with various computer-related tasks, I soon discovered that I had been unexpectedly assigned the critical responsibility of managing cybersecurity for the organization.

Much to my surprise, I learned that there was minimal security protocol already in place. In fact, no one had previously held this position, placing me in a unique—and somewhat daunting—situation. While I’m enthusiastic about tackling this responsibility, I find myself lacking the formal training or certifications typically associated with cybersecurity. Moreover, my practical experience in this field is virtually nonexistent.

Fortunately, the company is currently flying under the radar of extensive scrutiny. However, as we aim to elevate our market presence, it becomes increasingly vital that we establish a robust cybersecurity framework. Leadership has informed me about plans to hire a security consultant down the road, but naturally, we want to ensure that we present a credible and prepared front when that moment arrives.

Determined to prepare the organization for the future, I find myself asking: where do I even begin?

Seeking Guidance and Input

After posting my concerns and frustrations online, I received a tremendous amount of support and valuable advice from the community. It was reassuring to hear from others who’ve faced similar situations, and their insights have helped me feel more confident about navigating this uncharted territory.

Armed with the knowledge that I am not alone in this journey, I can now approach this responsibility with a clearer head and a sense of purpose.

Moving Forward

As I embark on this unexpected chapter, I aim to absorb as much information and training as possible. This includes researching best practices, exploring online courses, and perhaps even connecting with professionals in the cybersecurity field to gain further insights.

I am optimistic about our future in this realm, and while I may not have all the answers today, I am dedicated to becoming a capable steward of our cybersecurity efforts. With the right resources and community support, I truly believe that I can rise to the occasion.

Stay tuned for more updates on my progress as I navigate this fascinating yet intimidating landscape in the world of cybersecurity!
