I’ve been put in charge of security and I have no idea what I’m doing.

Navigating Unchartered Waters: My Unexpected Journey into Cybersecurity

Stepping into a new role can be both exciting and daunting, especially when you’re unexpectedly tasked with responsibilities that stretch beyond your expertise. Recently, I joined a company where my experience with technology was valued, but nothing could have prepared me for the reality of being handed the reins of cybersecurity.

During the interview process, the discussion around assisting with computer-related issues seemed straightforward enough. However, it quickly became clear that I was now responsible for managing the company’s cybersecurity framework—something I had no formal training or certification for. To make matters more challenging, the organization had previously lacked any established protocols, leaving me in uncharted territory.

While it’s a relief that our company isn’t currently under intense scrutiny, the landscape is set to change as we aim to elevate our profile in the industry. The plan includes bringing on a security consultant to guide us through the complexities of cybersecurity, but I’m determined to ensure we don’t look lost when they arrive. As the newly appointed point person for security, I find myself asking, “Where do I even begin?”

Despite the initial panic, I feel a blend of resolve and curiosity—perhaps this is an opportunity to learn and grow in a critical field. The first step, I believe, is to educate myself on the basics of cybersecurity. This involves not only familiarizing myself with potential threats but also understanding essential protocols and best practices.

Connecting with online resources, taking introductory courses, and engaging with cybersecurity communities can provide valuable insights and guidance. Additionally, I plan to reach out to professionals in the field, seeking advice and mentorship wherever possible. Building a strong foundation through research will help me implement basic security measures, ensuring we have a fighting chance against any potential vulnerabilities.

I am filled with gratitude for the support I’ve received from others, and while the journey ahead may be challenging, I’m optimistic about weathering the storm. With determination and the right resources, I believe I can lay a solid groundwork for our future cybersecurity efforts.

Here’s to the adventure ahead—let’s hope I don’t get lost along the way!
