Navigating the World of Cybersecurity: A Newcomer’s Journey
Taking on new responsibilities can often feel overwhelming, especially when tasked with an area as critical as cybersecurity without prior experience. Recently, I found myself in that exact position after starting a new role. My job interview discussed assisting with tech-related tasks, but I was not prepared for the unexpected shift to managing our company’s cybersecurity efforts.
To my surprise, I discovered that the company lacked any existing protocols or frameworks to safeguard its digital assets, and no one had been overseeing cybersecurity prior to my arrival. While I am eager to embrace the challenge and retain this responsibility, I am acutely aware that I donβt possess formal training, certifications, or hands-on experience in this field.
Fortunately, the organization isn’t currently under intense scrutiny, but we anticipate increased visibility in the near future. To address potential vulnerabilities, there are discussions about hiring a security consultant down the line. My goal is to ensure we are adequately prepared for their arrival rather than presenting ourselves as unprepared novices.
So, where do I even begin this journey into cybersecurity? How can I set the foundation for a robust security posture?
I appreciate the support and guidance from community members who have shared their insights with me. Iβm beginning to feel more confident that I can navigate this daunting task and emerge successfully on the other side!
If you find yourself in a similar situation or have valuable advice from your own experiences, I would love to hear your thoughts. Together, we can create a safer digital environment for our organizations.
