Just failed an interview because I didn’t solved the game “keep talking and no one explodes”

Navigating Interview Challenges: A Personal Experience with a Game-Based Assessment

Interviews can be daunting, but they can take unexpected turns that leave you scratching your head. Recently, I faced a particularly unusual interview process that ended on an unexpected note, and it all revolved around a game called “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.”

After successfully passing my initial exams, I received a call just two hours later inviting me to progress to the next stage of the interview process. This was where things took a turn. For those unfamiliar, the game is designed to test teamwork and communication skills under pressure. Unfortunately, my lack of familiarity with the game became my downfall.

With just five minutes on the clock, I found myself thrown into an environment where I was expected to perform without prior knowledge of the game mechanics. To make matters worse, the HR representative later informed me that I had not passed the assessment due to not completing the game, referring to it as a “technical exam.”

Let me clarify: I understand that working under pressure is a crucial skill. I consider myself fairly adept at managing stress. However, the interview setting was unlike any real-world scenario I had encountered. With a webcam on me and minimal time to organize my workspace or grasp the game’s instructions, I felt completely at a disadvantage. And for a position that was at a minimum wage level—essentially a Help Desk role—this approach seemed both excessive and misguided.

The experience left me questioning the effectiveness of such interview techniques. Have others faced similar challenges during the interview process? Has a company’s approach ever seemed unreasonable to you?

Interestingly, a week later, I received a follow-up call relaying the disappointing news. It’s comforting to know that many people relate to the struggles of navigating absurd interview situations, especially when they involve high-stakes assessments that don’t accurately reflect one’s abilities.

Once again, thank you all for the support. It seems that even in the world’s leading cybersecurity companies, the interview process can introduce unexpected hurdles. Here’s to better experiences in future interviews!

  1. Hi there,

Firstly, I appreciate you sharing your detailed experience. Interviews involving game-based assessments like “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes” can be quite challenging, especially when they test skills under time constraints and without prior experience.

If you’re interested in improving your familiarity with similar puzzle or communication-based games, you might find it helpful to practice collaboratively with friends or colleagues. There are also online resources and tutorials that can help you understand common mechanics and strategies used in these types of games. This can enhance your comfort level and performance in future assessments.

Additionally, for technical interviews that involve unfamiliar tasks, I recommend communicating openly with the interviewer if possible. Explaining your approach, demonstrating problem-solving skills, and expressing willingness to learn can sometimes be more valuable than prior experience alone.

Remember, while these assessments can highlight specific skills, they don’t define your overall ability or worth. Keep honing your skills and maintain confidence—you’ve already demonstrated resilience by reflecting on and sharing this experience. Best of luck in your future endeavors!
