Just found out my ethernet is slowed down because the lights are on

Troubleshooting Ethernet Slowdowns: A Surprising Culprit

Recently, I encountered an unexpected issue with my home’s internet connection that might resonate with some of you. After over a year of wrestling with inconsistent ethernet speeds, I finally discovered the source of my troubles: the lighting in my living room.

When I first moved in, I regularly faced frustrating drops in my ethernet speed, often dipping below 10 Mbps—even at times plunging to a dismal range of 0.5 to 2 Mbps, despite subscribing to a 1 Gbps service. Initially, I suspected that streaming activities from my roommates or potential malware were to blame, especially since my phone’s Wi-Fi connection appeared unaffected.

However, the mystery unraveled just yesterday. I learned that whenever I switched on the lights in the room housing my router, my powerline ethernet connection would plummet drastically from around 100 Mbps to a mere 10 or 20 Mbps. This baffling phenomenon made me wonder if I’d have to choose between studying in well-lit comfort and suffering through sluggish internet speeds.

Now, I’m on a quest to find a solution: Is there a way to prevent the lights from interfering with the powerline ethernet performance? Or will I have to limit my internet use whenever I want to illuminate my living space?

If anyone has insights or suggestions on how to tackle this issue, I would love to hear your thoughts! Meanwhile, I’m exploring some potential fixes that could restore my ethernet connection without sacrificing lighting. Stay tuned for updates, and let’s see if we can shine a light on this perplexing problem together!
