Laptop failing to boot after applying thermal paste

Troubleshooting Laptop Boot Issues After Applying Thermal Paste

If you’ve ever faced overheating issues with your laptop, you know how frustrating it can be. Recently, I encountered this problem with my own device, leading me to some rather unexpected challenges when I attempted to apply thermal paste for the first time—only to end up with a laptop that refuses to boot.

The Overheating Dilemma

For some time, my laptop had been experiencing frequent overheating episodes, resulting in unexpected shutdowns. After conducting a thorough cleaning of the fan and heat sink, and even attempting to free up space on my hard drive, I realized that there could be another culprit: the thermal paste. Given that I have owned this laptop since my high school days and hadn’t changed the thermal paste once in all that time, I figured it was likely overdue for an update.

The Stripped Screw Incident

As I embarked on the process of replacing the thermal paste, I encountered my first roadblock: one of the screws on the heat sink was stripped, making it impossible to remove. Although it might not have been the best move, I decided to carefully bend the metal bracket holding the problematic screw to access the CPU.

Upon inspecting the CPU, I noticed that a significant amount of old thermal paste had leaked beyond the metallic surface and onto surrounding components. Not being well-versed in computer hardware, I understood that this could lead to short circuits, so I took extra caution to gently clean the area with a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol.

The Reapplication Process

I proceeded to apply a new, thin layer of thermal paste to the CPU, being extra careful not to overdo it. After sealing everything back up, I pressed the power button—only for my laptop to fail to boot up. While the fan whirred to life momentarily, the screen remained dark, and the system eventually shut down again.

To add to my confusion, the Caps Lock key began to blink in a sequence of three long blinks followed by two short ones. From my research, this blinking pattern indicated a potential RAM issue. In an effort to resolve this, I removed the RAM, dusted it off, and even tried changing the RAM slot—yet each attempt to boot resulted in the same frustrating outcome.

Seeking Answers

At this point, I’m left wondering if I inadvertently harmed my laptop during the thermal paste reapplication. Did I apply too much or too little paste? Could the
