Troubleshooting Sudden Laptop Shutdowns: A Guide to Identifying the Issue

Experiencing unexpected shutdowns with your laptop can be a frustrating problem, especially when pinpointing the cause feels like a daunting task. In this post, I will share my experience with my Asus TUF A15 laptop, which has started shutting down unpredictably during various tasks, and outline the steps I’ve taken to resolve the issue.

The Problem at Hand

At first, my laptop would shut down after extended use or when I engaged in resource-heavy activities like gaming or running development environments, such as Visual Studio Code. However, the situation has escalated to the point where it now shuts down suddenly and without warning.

When I refer to the laptop “shutting down,” I mean that the screen goes dark, all processes cease, and the audio stops abruptly. Interestingly, the keyboard backlighting, cooling fans, and hard disk drive indicator lights remain active, indicating that not everything is shutting down properly.

Steps Taken to Diagnose the Issue

In an effort to troubleshoot the problem, I have implemented several measures:

1. Enhanced Cooling: I thoroughly cleaned the cooling fans to improve thermal efficiency, hoping to mitigate any overheating issues that could be affecting performance.

2. RAM Testing: I removed the 2 GB RAM sticks and experimented with different configurations and slots, aiming to identify any faulty memory.

3. Event Viewer Investigation: I accessed the Windows Event Viewer to look for logs related to the shutdowns. Unfortunately, I found that the logs were cleared after each occurrence, preventing further analysis.
