Losing my mind over a docking station problem – Monitor not receiving input

Troubleshooting Monitor Connectivity Issues with a Lenovo ThinkPad Docking Station on Windows 11

Introduction

Integrating multiple devices via docking stations can significantly enhance productivity, but it often comes with its own set of technical challenges. Recently, I encountered a perplexing issue where my monitor failed to receive input when connected through a Lenovo ThinkPad DK1633 docking station, despite the setup working flawlessly moments earlier. In this article, I will detail the problem, the troubleshooting steps I undertook, and possible solutions to resolve similar connectivity issues.

Background

The setup involved a new HP Omnibook 7 running Windows 11, used at my current job, and a Lenovo ThinkPad DK1633 docking station inherited from a previous role. The docking station was previously connected to an HP EliteBook x360, with no issues. The monitor is connected via the docking station’s only input, Direct Input. Initially, the monitor recognized the signal, but after the laptop went to sleep, the input ceased to be received, while other peripherals like keyboard, mouse, webcam, and Ethernet continued to function properly. Notably, the laptop charges through the dock, although at a slower pace.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

  1. Driver and Firmware Updates

  2. Ensured all device drivers were current, including the monitor, laptop BIOS, and docking station firmware.

  3. Downloaded and installed the latest DisplayLink driver and DisplayLink Manager software to facilitate display connectivity.

  4. Cable and Connection Checks

  5. Replaced and reconnected all cables involved in the setup, performing what I call the “cable dance”—a process of re-seating connections to eliminate loose contacts.

  6. Verified that the physical connections were secure and intact.

  7. Device Restarts and Reset Procedures

  8. Restarted the laptop, docking station, and monitor multiple times.

  9. Reset the docking station by unplugging it for at least 30 seconds, performing a power button reset for 30 seconds, and combining both methods.
  10. Tested with an alternative docking station of the same model, which yielded identical results.

  11. BIOS and Settings Inspection

  12. Accessed BIOS settings to look for options related to USB-C, Thunderbolt, or video output configurations, but found no relevant settings.

Troubleshooting Challenges

Despite these efforts, the monitor is still not receiving input. The problem initially resolved temporarily but reappeared after sleep mode, suggesting potential issues related to wake
