Experiencing Performance Issues After Upgrading GPU: A Troubleshooting Journey

Upgrading your graphics card can often lead to significant performance improvements across a range of applications and games. However, sometimes the transition does not go as smoothly as expected, leaving users frustrated and seeking solutions. Recently, I undertook a fresh Windows 11 installation following an upgrade from a Radeon RX 7700 XT to a Radeon RX 9070 XT. While some titles like Final Fantasy XIV saw notable performance enhancements—jumping from approximately 60 FPS on standard desktop settings to 90-100 FPS on maximum settings—my experience with other games has been far more challenging.

Specifically, I have encountered severe performance drops in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Despite the hardware change being solely the GPU upgrade, the game’s performance has deteriorated rather than improved. Initially, I played the game on a medium preset at 1440p resolution with a 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratio, achieving 40-60 FPS. However, recent tests have resulted in persistent frame rates below 30 FPS, even when lowering settings and using 33% downscaling, which negatively impacts visual quality without resolving the performance issues.

Troubleshooting efforts over the past several hours have included:

  • Multiple clean installations of graphics drivers utilizing Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in safe mode
  • Rolling back to previous driver versions to identify potential compatibility issues
  • Toggling features such as Resize Bar (ReBAR) to see if they influence performance

Despite these measures, the issue persists, and I remain uncertain about the underlying cause. The hardware configuration has not changed beyond the GPU swap, and other system components are unaffected.

This experience highlights that hardware upgrades can sometimes introduce unforeseen challenges. Ongoing troubleshooting—such as monitoring system temperatures, checking for background processes, ensuring BIOS and firmware are up-to-date, and verifying game-specific optimizations—may help identify the root of the problem.
