The Journey of My Lost iPhone: A Tale of Technology and Sentimentality
Two years ago, I had to face the unfortunate reality of losing my old iPhone. Little did I know, this device would reappear in my life—not in a way I expected. Recently, I received a notification from the Find My app, indicating that my long-lost iPhone was still “alive and well” on another continent, far away in rural Africa.
Naturally, my first instinct was to erase the device remotely through the app. But this raised a pressing question: was the information truly wiped clean, or could someone still access it?
A Trip Down Memory Lane
To provide some context, my journey began on March 20, 2020, when I made the difficult decision to flee back to my home country with my parents due to the outbreak of the pandemic. My university advised us to leave, so, in a rush, I packed nearly all my belongings into my minivan.
Fast forward to September 2021, when I returned to the university after an extended absence. My first stop was to reclaim my two beloved iPhones that held significant sentimental value—a cherished iPhone 4 nestled in a leather case and an iPhone 6s. To my dismay, upon searching my minivan, I discovered they were nowhere to be found. It suddenly hit me that I had inadvertently left both devices behind in my apartment when I moved out in March 2020. By the time I returned, my old place had seen three different tenants come and go.
An Unexpected Notification
Then, in January 2022, I received a surprising update: the iPhone 4 was located! However, the excitement was bittersweet, as it turned out to be over 7,000 kilometers away in a remote area of Africa. Without hesitation, I executed a remote wipe of the device. As for my iPhone 6s, it remains lost and has yet to resurface, leaving me with a mix of nostalgia and curiosity about its fate.
