Taming the Tab Monster: Efficiently Closing Microsoft Edge Tabs
Thanksgiving gatherings can often lead to unexpected challenges, especially when family members’ tech habits come into play. Recently, I found myself faced with the formidable task of managing a staggering 438 open tabs in Microsoft Edge on my grandmother’s Acer Aspire E1 running Windows 10. With the browser sluggishly frozen, the typical methods for closing tabs or accessing settings were futile.
If you’re in a similar situation and need to quickly declutter your browser without diving into each individual tab, you might be seeking a reliable shortcut. Fortunately, there’s a relatively straightforward way to handle this.
Step 1: Force Closing Microsoft Edge
To close Microsoft Edge completely, you can use the following shortcut:
1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
to open the Task Manager.
2. Find Microsoft Edge in the list of applications, right-click on it, and select “End Task.”
This action will force the browser to close, wiping all open tabs from active memory.
Step 2: Restarting Edge Fresh
Once you’ve closed the application, you can start it anew without the previous tabs reopening. Simply launch Microsoft Edge again from the taskbar or program menu and it should open without restoring the tabs from the last session.
Additional Information
If you prefer a fresh start every time you open the browser, you can change the startup settings in Microsoft Edge:
1. Open Edge.
2. Click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
3. Navigate to “Settings.”
4. Go to the “On startup” section and choose “Open a new tab” to ensure your tabs don’t automatically reopen.
Conclusion
While transitioning to a different browser could be an option, it’s often complicated, especially when you need to download it through Edge itself. For now, following these steps should make managing tabs during family holidays much more manageable, allowing you to focus on what really matters—spending quality time with loved ones.
