Crafting Your Cybersecurity Learning Journey: A Comprehensive Plan
Happy Monday, everyone!
I hope this post finds you well. I typically prefer to keep a low profile on social media, but over the past year, I’ve had the pleasure of engaging with a substantial number of individuals within this community. As a result, I have received numerous requests for a structured learning plan specifically tailored for those interested in entering the field of information security. This prompted me to create my own draft of a recommended learning path, which I’m excited to share with you.
It’s important to note that while I’ve crafted this plan based on my experiences running a cybersecurity consulting practice, it’s not set in stone. I believe many of you will find it beneficial, especially since I’ve had conversations with upwards of 100 members from this community. A common observation I’ve made is that many people perceive the field of information security as being limited to just two career paths:
- Security Operations Center (SoC) Analyst
- Penetration Tester
However, I urge you not to confine yourselves to these options. The cybersecurity landscape is vast, and there are countless opportunities available that cater to a diverse range of interests and skills.
As someone who engages with various customers on a daily basis, I interact with approximately 1,000 companies annually, gaining insights into their unique security needs and challenges. While most of my experience comes from working with larger organizations, the knowledge I’ve gathered can still provide a valuable perspective, even if you are associated with a smaller company.
In the spirit of sharing, I’m pleased to outline my suggested learning path for newcomers to the field. I hope this serves as a useful guide as you embark on your journey in cybersecurity.
