My Computer Was Hacked While I Was Showering: Unintended Browser Activity Led to Unauthorized Access to My Crypto Accounts

Responding to a Disturbing Computer Breach: A Cautionary Tale

Recently, I experienced a jarring incident with my computer that left me feeling vulnerable and concerned about online security. I had just stepped out of the shower when I noticed my browser inexplicably opening on its own. To my shock, I saw someone typing “bitch” into the Chrome address bar and navigating through my system until they reached my cryptocurrency folders. They even accessed my Coinbase and Binance accounts.

In a panic, I tried to close the browser using the alt+F4 command, but nothing seemed to respond. My mouse was unresponsive, and I felt powerless as I faced this alarming intrusion. Ultimately, I had no choice but to force shut down my computer. In that moment, I wondered what actions I should take next.

Update: Taking Control After the Breach

After sharing my experience and seeking advice from the online community, I took proactive steps to secure my accounts. First and foremost, I changed all of my passwords. Additionally, I unplugged my system and performed a clean installation to eliminate any potential threats. I implemented robust security measures, such as setting LastPass to request my password every time I launch the browser and adopting two-factor authentication apps for an added layer of security.

To clarify, I do not store any cryptocurrency on my device; the folders in question were simply bookmarks for Coinbase and Binance. It was unsettling to witness someone manipulating my browser so brazenly. From my observations, the intruder typed “bitch,” backspaced, and then began browsing through my bookmarks.

I considered that the remote access application, TeamViewer, could have been the source of this security breach, but I opted not to reinstall it after several community members indicated that it might be the issue. Interestingly, my computer’s background did not turn black as it usually does when someone takes over a session, which left me perplexed about the nature of this intrusion; my mouse and keyboard were entirely unresponsive during the episode.

On a more optimistic note, I sought help from a tech-savvy friend who is part of a hacker group and has an extensive knowledge of such matters. Given our long-standing friendship and trust, I felt confident in his ability to provide guidance. He has a reputation for protecting his friends against online threats and has experience dealing with malicious individuals.
