My Computer Won’t Power Up, and My PhD Is Relying on It

My Computer Dilemma: A PhD on the Line

Update: The Issue is Resolved!

I’m thrilled to share that my computer is operational again! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who took the time to comment and offer suggestions—there were so many responses that I couldn’t reply to each one individually, but your input was invaluable.

After a thorough investigation, we determined that the power supply unit (PSU) was the culprit. We opened the system and tested it with a spare PSU we had, which fortunately set the fans spinning consistently—unlike the original PSU that only made a brief attempt to start. We also noticed the orange LED indicator on the front was behaving the same way, confirming our suspicions.

Interestingly, I discovered that using a PSU with a higher wattage than the original is perfectly acceptable. My original unit was rated at 500 watts, while the one we tested was only 350 watts. To ensure maximum efficiency and future-proofing, we decided to purchase a new 650-watt PSU. Now, my computer is back in its designated spot and running smoothly, allowing me to resume my important experiments today!

I sincerely appreciated the suggestions regarding data backup, but they didn’t quite address my immediate problem. Nonetheless, the overwhelming support from the community truly helped me troubleshoot this issue!

The Problem: An Unexpected Shutdown

For those who are unfamiliar with my situation, I rely heavily on this Windows computer, which has been essential for the vital software we use in our lab for the past 5 to 10 years. Strangely enough, it powered down on its own sometime between last evening and this morning without any indication of a power outage.

I attempted various troubleshooting methods, including:

  • Replacing power cables
  • Trying different outlets (across multiple circuits)
  • Switching the power button at the back on and off
  • Holding the reset button for about 30 seconds

After these efforts, I found that if I wait a little while and then press the power/reset button, an orange light flickers briefly before the system becomes unresponsive again. It seems that this light is a good indicator of the computer’s operational status, as it stays lit when everything’s functioning correctly.

Unfortunately, I can’t provide a model number or brand for my machine, as it lacks any clear identifying features. However, I’ve included some photos of the front and back for reference, albeit from our rather disorganized electronics rack. [View the
