Coping with a Garage Full of Hard Drives: Seeking Advice
It’s quite a unique predicament I find myself in—over 500 hard drives occupying space in my garage. This unusual collection traces back to my late father-in-law, who seemed to have amassed a considerable number of refurbished SCSI hard disk drives (HDDs) through means that remain unclear to me. His original intention was to sell these drives, but unfortunately, he passed away before he could embark on that venture. Now, the responsibility of deciding their fate has fallen into my hands.
As I sift through this treasure trove, I’ve discovered a broad price range for these drives, spanning from $10 to $120 each, depending on the model. However, given their age and the niche market for such hardware, I’m uncertain about finding buyers who would be interested in acquiring them.
To clarify, every single drive in this collection is factory refurbished, sealed, and packaged appropriately for shipping. Their pristine condition adds an interesting twist to the dilemma I’m facing.
Part of me contemplates the notion of cutting my losses—essentially my late father-in-law’s losses—and simply scrapping them. Yet, there’s a lingering concern about missing the opportunity to sell these drives to individuals or businesses that could put them to good use.
In light of this situation, I’m reaching out for suggestions. What would you do in my shoes? Should I pursue selling them, and if so, what platforms or strategies would be effective? Alternatively, should I consider recycling them instead?
For those interested, here are the specific models I have available:
- Seagate Barracuda ST15150N
- Seagate Barracuda ST118273LC
- Seagate Cheetah ST118202LC
- IBM DRHS IEC-950 ECE32148
I would greatly appreciate any guidance or advice as I navigate this unexpected responsibility.
