Troubleshooting Laptop Screen Flickering: A Personal Experience

Recently, I encountered a frustrating issue with my Lenovo P51 laptop – the monitor started flickering and distorting quite randomly. I had just woken it up from sleep, and suddenly, the screen was in chaos. Despite having the latest version of Windows 10 installed and all updates completed, I was stumped when the problem occurred.

Initially, I tried a simple restart, hoping it might resolve the issue. Unfortunately, that did not yield any results. Thankfully, I have a secondary monitor connected via HDMI, and it was functioning perfectly, which suggested that the problem might be isolated to the laptop’s screen. In my attempts to document the problem, I attempted to upload a video; however, I faced internet connection issues and ended up sharing a still image instead. You can view it here.

In an update, I decided to boot the laptop in Safe Mode to see if I could troubleshoot further. To my dismay, the flickering persisted, making it challenging to navigate. I didn’t even manage to uninstall any drivers, as the situation was quite complicated. After holding down the power button for about 15 seconds to force a shutdown, I rebooted the laptop. Initially, the screen was still acting up for a few seconds, but then, out of nowhere, the display appeared normal again. I even managed to capture the moment on video, which you can watch here.

This entire experience left me feeling puzzled. What exactly caused this flickering? And could it happen again unexpectedly? I reached out to the community for advice because I certainly want to prevent this issue from recurring.
