My master’s thesis involved creating a cybersecurity education app modeled after Duolingo

Introducing SecureMind: A New App Revolutionizing Cybersecurity Education

Hello readers,

I am excited to share my recent project, an innovative iOS application named SecureMind, designed to teach cybersecurity principles to individuals from all backgrounds. This initiative is a key component of my master’s thesis, where I explore the effectiveness of mobile microlearning in fostering cybersecurity knowledge and motivation among users.

Discover the App

SecureMind draws inspiration from the engaging methodology of Duolingo, making the learning process not only informative but also enjoyable. Users have the option to share their app usage data voluntarily, allowing me to assess how well the various features are being utilized to enhance the learning experience.

The content within SecureMind is thoughtfully organized into chapters and sections, facilitating a structured learning environment. At the beginning of each chapter, users take an assessment to gauge their prior knowledge, followed by a recap after completing the section, which showcases their progress. Each section is designed to provide concise information followed by a quiz that tests comprehension and retention.

To bolster long-term retention, I’ve designed a dynamic library that becomes accessible after users finish the first chapter. This library expands with every completed chapter, allowing learners to revisit previously acquired knowledge. Additionally, I share updates on the latest cybersecurity news within the app to keep users informed and engaged.

Gamification for an Enhanced Learning Experience

Understanding that traditional learning methods can often feel monotonous, I have incorporated two primary gamification elements to make SecureMind more engaging. The Security IQ system incentivizes users with points for various activities, such as mastering new concepts, utilizing the library, and staying updated with cybersecurity news. As users actively participate, their IQ rises, but inactivity can lead to a decline—this adds a layer of motivation to keep users consistently engaged.

Furthermore, users can earn coins through their activities, which can be used to personalize aspects of their app experience, such as customizing the app icon or selecting custom notification titles.

To ensure the content is both accurate and reliable, I utilized the Digital Führerschein (DiFü) framework, backed by the German government, as the foundation for the app’s curriculum. This content was meticulously reviewed by my academic supervisor to uphold quality.

Join the Learning Journey!

I invite you to download SecureMind and join the journey towards gaining essential cybersecurity knowledge. Your support not only enhances your own understanding but also aids my research efforts.
