When DIY Fixes Go Wrong: A WiFi Woes Tale
We’ve all experienced those frustrating moments when technology just doesn’t seem to cooperate. This week, I encountered a classic example of this with my mom’s ancient Mac, which is running Windows 7. To put it bluntly, the WiFi has been on the fritz for the past couple of days—and that’s where things took a turn for the worse.
In an effort to resolve the connectivity issues, my mom took matters into her own hands. Armed with her trusty yet outdated 2011 Mac, she decided to perform what she referred to as a “system repair” (though I’m not entirely sure of the English terminology, as her computer operates in Czech). With the best intentions, she initiated the process, and that’s when the real troubles began.
Upon restarting the computer, I felt a sinking sensation in my stomach. This was not going to end well. As it began loading files, it eventually led into the infamous system repair cycle—a process that seemed endless. After what felt like an eternity of loading, the screen ultimately presented a disheartening message: either it couldn’t repair the computer or there was no issue at all.
But here’s the catch: there was indeed a problem—the WiFi was down, and it seemed as though the repair process had only compounded the issue. The computer continued to loop, and every attempt to interrupt this cycle resulted in a reset, taking us right back to square one. Logging in was simply not an option.
