Troubleshooting a PC That Won’t Start After Maintenance

Hello, fellow tech enthusiasts!

Recently, I decided to take on my first DIY project with my PC: cleaning and reapplying thermal paste on the CPU. While it felt empowering to dive into this task, I encountered an unexpected hurdle afterward. After reassembling everything, my PC stubbornly refuses to power on. I’ve pressed the power button multiple times, but to no avail.

I’ve identified a couple of potential issues that have me concerned:

  1. Potential Damage During Reassembly: When I removed the CPU cooler, the backplate fell off. Although I managed to reattach it, I worry that I may have inadvertently compromised the Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) or the CPU pins while fitting the cooler back in place. I inadvertently applied pressure as the cooler was slipping out of position, which could have caused damage.

  2. Motherboard Concerns: There’s also a chance that I might have harmed the motherboard while trying to secure the screws in place. The screws didn’t line up perfectly, and I feared that my adjustments may have led to unintended consequences.

At this point, I’m feeling a little apprehensive and want to avoid causing any further damage to my system. If anyone has advice on how to methodically diagnose the issue or steps to rectify this situation, I would greatly appreciate your insights. Thank you for your support!
