r/techsupport Going Dark: A Stand Against Reddit’s API Changes
Hello everyone,
We want to take a moment to address an important issue affecting our community and others across Reddit. The moderation team of r/techsupport has serious concerns about recent changes made to Reddit’s API policies that threaten to undermine the functionality of many cherished third-party applications.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced a significant increase in the costs associated with accessing its API. This change is not just an adjustment; it poses a grave threat to various third-party applications that provide invaluable features and enhancements that are absent in the official Reddit app. Popular apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, and BaconReader stand to be severely impacted by this policy shift.
Even if you aren’t a mobile app user, this is a broader issue that could hinder customization options available through tools like Reddit Enhancement Suite or the old.reddit.com interface. The changes are not only detrimental to users but also pose challenges for moderators who rely on these tools to maintain the quality and integrity of their subreddits.
In response to this alarming situation, the r/techsupport moderation team has decided to take a stand. We will be shutting down our subreddit for at least 48 hours starting June 12th to protest these API pricing changes, standing in solidarity with the wider community affected by this decision.
