Received a Worrying Email: What Should I Do?
Recently, I found myself in a situation that I never expected to encounter – I received an alarming email that left me both puzzled and concerned. In light of this, I wanted to share my experience and seek some advice from the community to ensure there’s nothing I should genuinely worry about.
To provide some context, the email I received contained some rather unsettling claims, and I thought it best to share the message for reference. You can view the details here.
My Internet Habits
First and foremost, I want to clarify my online behavior. Like many individuals, I enjoy consuming adult content, mostly on Pornhub; however, my preferences lean toward more conventional content—definitely free from anything that raises eyebrows, such as “teen porn.”
Additionally, I primarily use my desktop computer for browsing, and I do so without the intrusion of a webcam. When I occasionally access content on my phone, it’s exclusively on my iPhone, which is set up in a way that prevents any unauthorized camera access.
Email Usage and Privacy
The concerning part is that this email was sent to my business email address. This is an account I reserve strictly for client communication—never for personal logins or any other online activities. In fact, I’ve gone so far as to create a separate email specifically designed for dealing with spam and my Pornhub account. The business email is the only one that’s publicly available, as it’s featured on my website and mentioned in my YouTube video descriptions. As a small YouTuber with less than 1,000 subscribers, the email is visible to anyone who views my content.
To make matters even more secure, I have no contacts associated with this email. I access it using the official Mail app on both my iOS device and my Windows PC—nothing that could raise any flags in terms of security.
The Email’s Claims
The content of the email suggested that the sender was aware of my financial situation, claiming that I have around $2,000. It struck me as odd, as anyone genuinely hacking me would have quickly discovered that my actual account balance hovers closer to $20.
For anyone familiar with web hosting and email services, my website (and email) is hosted through HostGator, so I’m not sure if that adds any relevance to my situation.
