Recovering Video Files from an SD Card: A Quick Guide

Today, I encountered a frustrating issue while filming when my camera unexpectedly displayed a card read error. This problem not only caused my camera to crash, but I also found that the data on my SD card was showing up as a “Windows Access Add-In” file alongside an MDT filetype. Although my PC recognizes the card when connected, I’m unable to access or retrieve any of the files stored on it.

If you’ve ever faced a similar situation, you might be asking yourself: Is it possible to recover the video files?

The good news is that recovery might be achievable. One potential solution is to utilize the Panasonic Lumix Repair Tool, which is specifically designed for repairing corrupt video files from cameras. 1. Thank you for sharing your experience with the SD card issues. Based on what you’ve described, it sounds like your SD card may be experiencing corruption or file system errors, which can sometimes cause files to be inaccessible or appear as generic add-ins.

Since your PC recognizes the card but cannot access the files, I recommend the following troubleshooting steps:

    • Use data recovery software such as Recuva, PhotoRec, or Stellar Data Recovery to scan the SD card for recoverable files. These tools can often retrieve files even if the card appears corrupt.
    • Ensure that the SD card is using the correct filesystem; if it’s showing as ‘Windows Access Add-In’, it might be a formatting or corruption issue. Try running chkdsk from Command Prompt:
      chkdsk [drive letter]: /f /r
    • If possible, avoid writing new data to the card to prevent overwriting lost files.
    • Regarding the Panasonic Lumix Repair Tool, it is dedicated to repairing corrupt video files, which can be very helpful if your files are partially recoverable but corrupted. Using such specialized tools can increase the chances of restoring your footage.

Remember to always work on a copy of the SD card to prevent further data loss during recovery efforts.
