Reddit can ID my IRL location despite using a VPN, am I missing something?

Understanding How Reddit Can Detect Your Location Despite Using a VPN

Many users rely on VPNs to maintain their privacy and mask their real location online. However, some have noticed that certain platforms, like Reddit, still seem to identify their physical whereabouts even when using a VPN. This raises the question: How is Reddit able to determine my actual location despite my efforts to conceal it?

The Scenario

As a user based in the UK, I typically use a VPN to appear as though I am browsing from another country. When I activate my VPN, switch to private browsing mode, and clear all cookies and cache, I expect platforms like Reddit to treat me as a visitor from the VPN’s assigned location. Surprisingly, Reddit continues to recommend UK-based subreddits, and even when logged out, it still seems to know I’m in the UK.

What’s Really Going On?

Despite the VPN successfully altering my IP address and other websites recognizing my new location, Reddit seems to have additional methods of geolocation. This persistence can be attributed to several potential data points and mechanisms:

  1. Browser and Device Fingerprinting:
Websites can collect information about your browser type, version, installed plugins, screen resolution, and other fingerprinting data. When combined, these can create a unique profile that sometimes correlates with specific regions or user behaviors.

  2. Time Zone Settings:
Even if your IP suggests a different location, your device’s configured timezone can give away your actual region. If your device’s clock is set to UK time, Reddit might associate this with your physical location.

  3. Cookies and Trackers:
Persistent cookies or other tracking mechanisms stored locally on your device might reveal your true location or previous browsing habits, especially if these aren’t fully cleared.

  4. Account History and Behavior:
If you’ve previously logged in from a certain location or interacted with region-specific content, Reddit’s algorithms might use this history to infer your actual location.

The Solution

In my experience, the combination of a more robust VPN service and additional tools like timezone spoofers can mitigate these detection methods. By using a VPN that effectively masks all DNS and WebRTC leaks, along with setting my device’s timezone to match the VPN’s location, I was able to successfully hide my real location.

Final Thoughts

While VPNs are powerful tools for privacy, platforms like Reddit can employ multi-faceted methods to detect your location beyond just your
