Restored a 12-Year-Old Laptop and Set Up Ubuntu—Now It’s My 4-Year-Old’s First Device for Learning to Type and Write

Reviving an Old Laptop: A New Beginning for My Child’s Learning Journey

In an era where technology moves at lightning speed, it’s easy to overlook the value of our older devices. Recently, I decided to breathe new life into a 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This little machine is set to become my 4-year-old daughter’s very first laptop, opening up a world of possibilities for her to learn typing and writing.

As I embark on this journey, I’m eager to create a user-friendly experience tailored to her needs. My primary goal is to configure the laptop so that it launches directly into a text editor upon startup. This way, she won’t have to grapple with using a mouse just yet, allowing her to focus solely on her writing and typing skills.

Another feature I’m curious about is whether I can set the laptop to boot up with Caps Lock activated. This small adjustment could help her become familiar with uppercase letters from the get-go, reinforcing her early writing experiences.

I’m excited about this project and look forward to sharing the progress. Transforming an old device into a gateway for my child’s education is a rewarding endeavor, and I can’t wait to see how she embraces this new tool for learning!
