Reviving a Vintage Laptop: Setting Up Ubuntu for My Child’s First Learning Experience

Recently, I embarked on a rewarding project: revitalizing my old laptop, which has been with me for over a decade, by installing Ubuntu. This refurbished device is now destined to become my 4-year-old daughter’s first laptop—a wonderful tool for her to explore the worlds of typing and writing.

One of my main goals is to create an intuitive experience for her right from the start. To facilitate this, I’m looking for the simplest way to configure the laptop to open directly into a text editor upon startup. This would allow her to dive into her typing practice without having to maneuver a mouse just yet, keeping things straightforward and engaging.

Additionally, I have a rather quirky question: is it possible to set the laptop to start with the Caps Lock function enabled? This could help her with her initial writing exercises as she learns to type.
