Reviving an Old Laptop for My Child’s First Tech Experience

Recently, I took on the challenge of restoring a 12-year-old laptop and decided to breathe new life into it by installing Ubuntu. This upgraded device will serve as my four-year-old child’s first laptop, providing a fantastic opportunity to introduce her to the world of technology through typing and writing.

One of my goals is to simplify her experience. I’m looking for the most user-friendly way to set it up so that when she powers on the laptop, it automatically opens to a text editor. This way, she won’t need to worry about navigating with a mouse right away, allowing her to focus on developing her typing skills.

Additionally, I have a minor technical question: is there a way to configure the device to start with Caps Lock enabled? Setting this up could further aid her in easily recognizing letters and beginning to form words.
