Reviving a Vintage Laptop: A New Learning Tool for My Child

Recently, I embarked on a journey to breathe new life into my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This refurbished device is set to become the first laptop for my four-year-old daughter, providing her a fantastic opportunity to learn typing and writing skills.

As I prepare this educational tool for her, I’m considering the best way to simplify her user experience. My goal is to have the laptop boot directly into a text editor, allowing her to dive right into writing without needing to navigate a mouse or complicated menus. This could help her focus on developing her typing skills rather than getting sidetracked by other features.

Additionally, I’ve been pondering whether it’s possible to configure the laptop to start with the Caps Lock key enabled. This would help her get comfortable with uppercase letters right from the get-go, especially as she begins to play with different writing forms.
