Restored My 12-Year-Old Laptop and Installed Ubuntu — Now It’s My 4-Year-Old’s First Device for Learning to Type and Write

Reviving an Old Laptop: A New Starting Point for My Child

Recently, I took on the challenge of rejuvenating my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This device is going to serve a special purpose; it will be my 4-year-old child’s first computer. The goal is to create an engaging platform where she can learn to type and practice her writing skills.

One of the primary considerations I have is simplifying the user experience for her. I’m exploring ways to configure the laptop to boot directly into a text editor. This would remove the need for her to navigate with a mouse at this stage, making it easier for her to focus on typing and creativity.

Additionally, I’m curious about whether it’s possible to have the laptop start with Num Lock enabled. This could save a lot of hassle when it comes to key accessibility and ensuring her ease of use right from the get-go.

If you have any insights or suggestions on setting up the laptop in a user-friendly manner for a young novice, I’d love to hear them!
