Reviving a Vintage Laptop: A New Journey for My Child
In a remarkable feat of DIY ingenuity, I recently refurbished my 12-year-old laptop, breath new life into it by installing Ubuntu. This will serve as a whimsical introduction to technology for my 4-year-old daughter, providing her with a unique opportunity to explore typing and writing in a digital space.
One primary goal I have is to streamline her experience as she learns to navigate this new device. To make her first interactions with technology as intuitive as possible, I’m exploring ways to set the laptop to default to a text editor upon startup. This way, she can dive right into typing without needing to manage a mouse just yet. If you have any insights or recommendations on how to set this up efficiently, it would be immensely helpful!
Additionally, I’m curious about whether it’s possible to configure the device to start with Caps Lock enabled. This would allow her little fingers to experiment with proper capitalization from the get-go, encouraging her grasp of writing conventions.
I’m excited for this journey into the world of technology with my daughter, and I look forward to sharing more updates as she develops her skills on this rejuvenated piece of hardware.
