Restored my 12-year-old laptop and installed Ubuntu—now it’s my 4-year-old’s first device to learn typing and writing

Reviving an Old Laptop: A Perfect First Computer for My Child

In an exciting new project, I recently refurbished my twelve-year-old laptop and installed Ubuntu, transforming it into a perfect first computer for my four-year-old daughter. The goal is to create a user-friendly environment where she can begin her journey in typing and writing, laying the foundation for her future learning.

As I prepared the laptop for her use, I wanted to ensure that she could easily access a text editor without having to rely on the mouse just yet. This led me to explore the best way to set up the device so that it opens directly into a text editor upon startup. Providing her with a simple and straightforward interface would make the learning curve much gentler and more enjoyable.

Additionally, I had a question about functionality: Is it possible to configure the device to start up with the Caps Lock key activated? This feature could add an extra layer of convenience for her while she practices her typing skills.

I’m eager to see how she engages with her new laptop, and I’m looking forward to sharing the journey of her learning and exploration! If you have any tips or suggestions for setting up a kid-friendly experience, please feel free to share in the comments. Happy learning!
