Reviving an Old Laptop for Educational Purposes: My Journey with Ubuntu

Recently, I embarked on an exciting project: I successfully revived my 12-year-old laptop and installed Ubuntu on it. This classic device is now set to become my four-year-old daughter’s first laptop, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! My goal is to provide her a platform where she can learn how to type and explore her creativity through writing.

As I prepare this laptop for her, I’m looking for ways to simplify her user experience. Specifically, I want to set it up so that it opens directly into a text editor upon startup. This would mean she wouldn’t have to navigate using a mouse just yet, making the learning process smoother and more intuitive.

Additionally, I have a technical question: is it possible to configure the laptop to start with the Caps Lock key activated? This feature might help her get accustomed to typing capital letters without needing to press Shift all the time.
