Restored my 12-year-old laptop and installed Ubuntu — now it’s my 4-year-old’s first device for learning to type and write

Reviving an Old Laptop: A New Start for My Child

I recently breathed new life into my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu, and I’m excited to pass it down to my four-year-old daughter. This is an excellent opportunity for her to learn the fundamentals of typing and writing, all while using a device that has seen its fair share of history.

One of my goals is to create a user-friendly experience for her right from the start. To simplify her interaction with the laptop, I’m exploring options to have the system boot directly into a text editor. This way, she won’t have to worry about navigating with a mouse just yet. It’s all about making it as intuitive as possible for her young mind!

Additionally, I have a small technical question: is there a way to have the Caps Lock key activated by default when the laptop starts up? This could make her typing experience more consistent, as she gets accustomed to capitalizing the first letter of sentences.

If you have any tips or suggestions on how to optimize this setup for a child’s use, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
