Reviving a Vintage Laptop: Setting Up for My Child’s Learning Journey

Recently, I took on the rewarding challenge of restoring my 12-year-old laptop and decided to install Ubuntu on it. This little project is not just about giving an old device a new lease of life; it’s all for my 4-year-old daughter. I envision this laptop becoming her very first tool for learning how to type and express herself through writing.

As I set everything up, I realized I wanted to make the experience as seamless as possible for her. To ease her into using the laptop, I’m seeking the best way to configure it so that it opens directly into a simple text editor upon startup. This way, she won’t need to navigate with a mouse just yet, allowing her to focus on her writing without unnecessary distractions.

Additionally, I have a technical query: is there a way to set the device to boot with Caps Lock enabled by default? This small adjustment could make typing more comfortable for her as she starts to explore the keyboard.
