Restored My 12-Year-Old Laptop and Installed Ubuntu — Passing It Down to My 4-Year-Old as Her First Device to Learn Typing and Writing

Reviving a Legacy: Transforming an Old Laptop into a Learning Tool for My Child

In a world where technology evolves at lightning speed, it’s easy to overlook our trusty devices that have stood the test of time. Recently, I undertook the task of refurbishing my 12-year-old laptop, which now has a promising new future as the first computer for my four-year-old daughter. Equipped with Ubuntu, this old machine is set to become a gateway for her to learn typing and writing skills.

As I prepare this laptop for her use, I’m exploring ways to make it as user-friendly as possible. My primary goal is to have the laptop boot directly into a text editor, allowing her to start writing right away—without the need to navigate with a mouse. This approach not only simplifies the user experience but also helps her focus on the task at hand, building her confidence and skills.

Additionally, I have a technical question: is there any way to configure the laptop to start with the Caps Lock enabled? This could be particularly beneficial for her budding writing endeavors.

Through these small adjustments, I aim to create an accessible and engaging environment that fosters her love for learning. I look forward to sharing more updates on our journey with this laptop and the discoveries we make along the way!
