Reviving a Vintage Laptop: A Learning Tool for My Child
In a world dominated by the latest technology, it’s always refreshing to breathe new life into older devices. Recently, I successfully refurbished my 12-year-old laptop and installed Ubuntu on it. This laptop is set to become my four-year-old daughter’s first introduction to the digital realm, where she can start learning how to type and express her thoughts in writing.
As I prepare this device for her, my main goal is to make it as user-friendly as possible. I’d like to set it up so that when she powers it on, it opens directly into a text editor. This way, she won’t need to navigate with a mouse just yet, allowing her to focus on typing and creativity without the unnecessary complexity of additional applications.
Moreover, I’m curious if there’s a way to have the laptop boot up with Caps Lock activated by default. This would help her feel comfortable as she explores typing, giving her the freedom to express herself without worrying about capitalization at this early stage of her learning journey.
