Revitalizing an Old Laptop: Setting Up Ubuntu for a Young Learner

Recently, I took on the challenge of breathing new life into my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This trusty machine will soon become a valuable educational tool for my four-year-old daughter, providing her with an exciting introduction to typing and writing.

As I prepare this laptop for her use, one of my main objectives is to streamline her experience. I want to create an environment where she can start engaging with text without the need to navigate with a mouse just yet. To achieve this, I’m exploring methods to configure the laptop to launch directly into a text editor upon startup. This way, she can focus on her creative writing and typing skills right from the moment she powers it on.

Additionally, I’m considering whether it’s possible to set the device to automatically enable Caps Lock at startup. This feature could help her become accustomed to using proper capitalization in her writing without the additional step of toggling the key herself.

I’m excited about this journey of teaching my daughter essential skills through technology. With a few thoughtful adjustments, I aim to create a seamless and enjoyable experience that encourages her to explore her own creativity.
